Short Write-up: Doctor Jane Sayi was born in 1955 in Tanzania. She did a Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1976-1981 at the University of Dar-Es Salaam. After a one year Internship at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical centre (9181-82), she worked as a Tutorial Assistant in the department of Clinical Pharmacology. She then left for Ireland where she did her PhD degree in 1984-1987 at the University of Collage Galway. She returned to the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and rose through the ranks from Senior Lecturer to her current position as Head of the Department from 2000. She has also a been the A s s o c i a t e D e a n ,Undergraduates, Faculty ofMedicine, MUCHS for 3 years (1997-2000). She has research interests in Alzheimer’s disease malaria and genetics (CYP450 enzymes). She has 21 publications mainly on genetics.
Dr. Jane Sayi is an extremely efficient collaborator. She has facilitated very productive collaborations with the African Institute of Biomedical science and Technology and with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. These collaborations have resulted in the training of several postgraduate students and publications in high impact journals. Her skills at getting things done even under sometimes very difficult circumstances makes her a unique leader that Africa needs in defining and exploring new biomedical fronts. She has co-coordinated research in the pharmacogenetics of drug metabolizing enzymes and in bio-analysis of anti-parasitic drugs which have contributed to Tanzania being one of the leading countries in these studies in Africa.
