Page 1 of 2 About ASDMD The African Society for Drug Metabolism and Development (ASDMD) is a scientific organization which aims to promote pharmaceutical sciences in Africa. The idea to start the society came in 1997 when Prof. A. Walubo with the help of the pharmacology department at Bloemfontein University, South Africa organized a workshop that aimed to promote interaction amongst scientist working in pharmaceutical science. The workshop was a great success and it led to the formation of a drug metabolism group, which later gave birth to the society in 2002 at an Industrial Drug ADMET course organized by the African Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology (AiBST). Professor Walubo was elected the first president of the society. Since then the society has grown from strength to strength and has members from countries from all over Africa.
Societies such as ASDMD provide platforms for the update and exchange of scientific ideas by academics and industrialists, students and experts, policy makers and the public in the pursuance of excellence in biomedical research. The formation of ASDMD therefore brings African scientists into the international fold of scientific and technological endeavours in the field of drug metabolism and development. Besides promoting pharmaceutical sciences in Africa, it will serve as a platform for interaction with similar societies in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia in the global quest for the discovery, development and deployment of safe, efficacious and affordable medicines.
Mission To ensure drug safety and availability by training young scientists on the relevant aspects of drug metabolism and development. Vision Improved use of drugs and availability of affordable medicines will reduce morbidity from adverse drug reactions as well as treatable and preventable diseases. Objectives
- To encourage research on drug metabolism that promotes safer use of drugs in humans.
- To encourage development of effective, cheap and safe drugs.
- To promote production of high quality scientific data by encouraging use of acceptable research quality standards such as Quality Standards in Biomedical Research (QSBR), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
- To ensure respect and safety of research subjects by promoting use of internationally acceptable ethical principles and guidelines for the conduct of biomedical research.
- To facilitate communication among researchers on drug metabolism and development in Africa and elsewhere by encouraging discussion, as well as forstering exchange of opinions and information by organizing workshops, congresses, symposia, courses, meetings and other means of oral and printed communication.
- To be concerned with proper representation of African researchers on drug metabolism and development in national and international affairs.
- To promote an understanding of the value studying drug metabolism and development in the spheres of government, industry, education and society in general.
