Wite Up. Doctor Abdul-Nasser Y Elzouki’s illustrous carrier started in 1985 when he completed his medical degree (Doctor of Medicine (M.B.B.S)) at the Medical University of Benghazi, Libya. He proceeded to do an MSc in Tropical Medicine in 1991 at the University of Liverpool in the UK. In 1991 he also completed a Diploma in Tropical Medicine at the University of London in the UK. He then moved to Sweden where he qualified for the Swedish Board in Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of Malmo in 1996. An avid academic he is, he proceeded to do a PhD in Medicine at the University of Lund in Sweden which he completed in 1998. In the same year he was awarded a subspeciality Fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University Hospital, Malmo in Sweden. From his internatinal travels, it is no surprise that besides Arabic, he is fluent in Swedish and English!! Dr. Abdul-Nasser Y Elzouki is one of the leading medical scientists in Libya with extensive experience in clinical practise,teaching medical students and medical research. His clinical experience includes running internal medicine and hepatology & gastroenterology in-patient wards and out-patient clinics and performing many clinical procedures including gastroscopy,colonoscopy, liver biopsy, abdominal paracentesis, bone marrow aspiration, …etc. He has been involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students since 1989 to present (as Demonstrator, Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor), and in teaching of Postgraduate Doctors since 1999. He currently is the general training supervisor of postgraduate training of internal medicine, Libyan Board, Benghazi, Libya. Dr Elzouki has made numerous contributions in research with special focus on gastroenterology and liver diseases; mainly on viral hepatitis (B and C), plasma protein metabolism in particular a1-antitrypsin deficiency and a1-antichymotrypsin deficiency, and systemic vasculitis. His research work has contributed to the discovery of associations between antiproteases deficiancy and a number of diseases such as hepatitis C infection, systemic vasculitis, and genetic hemochromatosis. The discovery of the in vivo roles of protease inhibitors in hepatitis C infection was an important contibution as it led to multicenter trials which are ongoing to evaluate the effect of such treatment in patients with hepatitis C infection who are non-responders to interferon therapy. Towards the training of a new generation of medical doctors, he has supervised 10 MD-Dissertations and two Master-Thesis. He is currently supervising four MD-Dissertations, and one Master-Thesis (Faculty of Medicine, Garyounis University). Dr. Dr. Abdul-Nasser Y Elzouki has held numerous positions that have influence in the medical field and currently sits on many boards as he endeavours to promote better medical practices, teaching of medical students and research that will have a positive outcome for Libyans and African people. He is currently a member in European Association of Study of Liver Disease (EASL) (2004- present) and the Pan-Arab Association of Gastroenterology (PAAG) (2003 to present).
